Cold night in store for Hogmanay revellers

As we approach the turn of the year the forecast for the bells looks reasonably benign for most - though not all.

After Saturday's wet, windy and, at times, wintry conditions, the low pressure responsible loses its oomph.

That means while it's still with us through Hogmanay, as we get to midnight the winds for many are light.

We're still expecting some rain across the Northern Isles - and the winds across Orkney and Shetland will be strong from the southeast.

In fact, it's likely we'll see gales in Shetland, which may put paid to any firework displays there.

Elsewhere, we're expecting a few slow-moving showers across the Hebrides and west coast too.

The latest suggestions from our weather models is for a few showers to move into the east of Scotland, from Aberdeenshire to the Borders - but these should be isolated - and not cause too much of an impact and spoil your night.

A little drizzle is possible across west central Scotland as well, though the emphasis is on a lot of dry weather.

It will be cold for all. Temperatures will be around freezing to 4C and of course standing outside waiting for fireworks can often be a chilly affair.

However, for many it looks as though conditions will be kind - as the clock strikes 12 and we welcome in 2024.
