Three parrots have been rescued by animal welfare officers from a fire at a house in West Lothian.

The Scottish SPCA made the rescue after being called by firefighters to the blaze in Henderson Crescent in Broxburn on Wednesday at 1815 GMT.

Firefighters took about five hours to extinguish the fire which started in a bedroom on the first floor of a semi-detached house.

An investigation is under way into the cause of the fire. No-one was hurt.

Insp Stuart Murray, of the Scottish SPCA, said: "We are often called by the emergency services to give expert advice when animals are involved.

"In this case, all three birds were in good health after the fire and returned to their owner."
