In pictures: The young royals
An exhibition of more than 100 photographs of the Royal Family - including this one taken in 1936 - opens at The Queen’s Gallery in Edinburgh on Friday to celebrate the work of Royal photographer Marcus Adams. (All pictures by Marcus Adams/The Royal Collection)
Princess Elizabeth shows off two new teeth, which are just visible according to a note accompanying this picture sent from her nurse, Clara Knight, to the Duke and Duchess of York during their visit to Australia and New Zealand in 1927.
A young Princess Elizabeth poses for a photograph three days after the return of her parents from their official trip to Australia and New Zealand.
A proud father, the Duke of York, looks relaxed and happy as he carries his daughter, Princess Elizabeth in July 1929.
This portrait of Princess Margaret was subsequently coloured by Adams.
Princess Elizabeth strikes a pose in this portrait at the age of eight.
This striking head and shoulders portrait of Princess Elizabeth was taken in 1936, just days after her father, the Duke of York, was proclaimed sovereign as King George VI.
This shot of princesses Elizabeth and Margaret was taken just months before the outbreak of World War II in 1939. It is the last picture to show the princesses wearing frilly dresses and pretty necklaces.
In this photograph Princess Elizabeth stands against a backdrop reminiscent of a Scottish landscape. Adams enhanced the image using a graphite pencil.
Prince Charles and Princess Anne sat for Adams twice, in February and April 1954, while their parents were away on a Commonwealth tour.
