A school pupil is being treated in hospital after falling 15ft down a lift shaft at an Edinburgh school.

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that the 15-year-old girl fell into the shaft at Liberton High School.

She was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with back injuries after the alarm was raised at 09:54.

It is understood that the girl was one of a number of pupils in the lift when it become stuck between floors.

It is believed that the doors were opened in an effort to pull people from the lift, and that it was during this process that the teenager fell.

It is understood the girl will be released from hospital later.

An Edinburgh City Council spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that a Liberton High School pupil, a 15-year-old girl, fell approximately five metres in a lift shaft at the school.

"The emergency services were called immediately and the girl's parents were informed. The pupil is now at hospital.

"We have initiated an investigation into the incident and we will be cooperating fully with the Health and Safety Executive."
