A newborn baby girl is being looked after in hospital after being found on a street bench in Edinburgh.

The baby, thought to be no more than a day old, was discovered by a passer-by in Hailesland Park, behind Kilncroft Stair, at about 12:55 on Thursday.

Police Scotland said there was no sign of the baby's mother in the area, who medics advise will require urgent medical attention.

Officers said they were concerned for the wellbeing of the mother.

The baby, who is not thought to have been born on the bench, was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where she is being looked after by staff.

Ch Insp Richard Thomas said: "We are greatly concerned for the wellbeing of this baby girl's mother and are urging her to seek medical attention.

"We would ask anyone who might know who the mother is to encourage her to see a doctor urgently."
