John Kearns wins Foster's Edinburgh Comedy award

A comedian who was named best newcomer at last year's Edinburgh Fringe has scooped the Foster's Comedy award for best show at this year's festival.

John Kearns won the prize for his show Shtick which he has been performing at the Voodoo Rooms.

Alex Edelman was named this year's best newcomer. A show called Funz and Gamez won the panel prize.

The winners were announced in a ceremony at Dovecote Studios in Edinburgh on Saturday.

Last year, after winning the best newcomer award, Kearns, who was brought up in Tooting, told BBC Scotland he planned to give up his day job as a tour guide at the Houses of Parliament.

He said: "I feel I could do this for a living and maybe this will be a moment where I can do that."

The other nominees for best comedy show were James Acaster, Alex Horne, Sara Pascoe, Liam Williams, Romesh Ranganathan and Sam Simmons.

The awards, now in their 34th year, are given for best comedy show, with a cash prize of £10,000, best newcomer, with a cash prize of £5,000, and panel prize with a cash prize of £5,000.
