A man has gone on trial charged with the murder of two-year-old Madison Horn in Fife.

Kevin Park, 27, is accused of killing the toddler at a property in Kelty on 20 April.

Mr Park, the former boyfriend of Madison's mother, Anne Marie White, denies murdering Madison by repeatedly striking her.

The High Court in Glasgow heard that Mr Park was looking after the toddler while Ms White was out with friends.

The charge against Mr Park includes claims that he shouted at Madison, pulled her hair, lifted the child up and repeatedly struck her head against a wall.

It goes on to allege that he also bit the toddler on the body before repeatedly striking her again "by means to the prosecutor unknown".

'Caved in'

Ms White told the court that when she saw her daughter in hospital on the night of the incident, she was bruised on her cheek and head and some of her hair was missing.

The child's mother told the court Mr Park had contacted her earlier to tell her Madison had been jumping on her bed and it had "caved in".

He had told Ms White that Madison was developing a bruise, but that she was fine and they were watching a film.

The court heard that within the hour Mr Park had told Ms White that he had phoned an ambulance as Madison was not breathing.

Prosecutor Jennifer Bain asked her how Mr Park was when he told her this.

Ms White said: "Seemed fine - he just said that he had phoned an ambulance for Madison.

"He said that he had gone to the door to take a (takeaway) delivery and Madison was not breathing, so had to phone an ambulance."

'So lifeless'

Ms White said she went into a panic and started crying. She then went to the hospital.

Recalling that evening, she added: "I was with her when she died. She just looked so lifeless."

Earlier, Ms White told the court she started dating Mr Park in November 2013 and he got on "really well" with her daughter.

Asked by the prosecution lawyer if she was "content" leaving Madison in Mr Park's care while she went to a friend's birthday celebration in Cowdenbeath, Ms White replied: "That's right."

Asked how Madison had been prior to Miss White going out on 20 April, she said: "Hyper, but she was fine...jumping on the bed, laughing.

"She had been trying to put my make up on as I had left it on the bed."

She also told the jury her daughter had been a "happy child".

"She loved playing outside, colouring in, playing with her toys. She was spoiled by everyone."
