Motorists have been urged to stop parking on a new cycleway that is being built in Edinburgh.

Drivers have been taking advantage of the lack of yellow lines on the segregated cycle path in Buccleuch Street.

The cycleway from The Meadows to Portobello opens at the end of June.

The city council said drivers will be fined for illegally parking on the cycleway once it is open. It has put cones down in a bid to deter motorists.

A council spokesman said: "While the cycle route improvements are not due for completion until the end of June drivers should not be parking on it, and the council will be placing No Waiting cones along the cycleway to discourage this.

"Should the problem persist we will take further action."

Caroline Brown, an Edinburgh cyclist, said: "I think it's extraordinary that people feel entitled to park their cars wherever they like, even when that obstructs the way for other people.

"Parking on pavements and cycle lanes is pretty common and this just demonstrates the entitlement some drivers feel."
