Stars gather for Edinburgh International Film Festival

The world premiere of The Legend of Barney Thomson, Robert Carlyle's directorial debut, was featured as the opening film of this year's Edinburgh International Film Festival. Braveheart and Trainspotting actor James Cosmo stars in the film, in a cast which includes Ray Winstone and Emma Thompson. Shot in Glasgow, the comedy thriller tells the story of the downtrodden Barney Thomson who sees his ranking in a traditional Glasgow barber shop threatened by a younger colleague.

Tom Courtenay, who plays the hapless Ch Supt McManaman in the film, attended the screening at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh.

Rushmore, Acid House and Stone of Destiny actor Stephen McCole plays Wullie Henderson - the son of the shop's owner.

Kevin Guthrie, who played the lead role in Sunshine on Leith, stars as Constable Macpherson, under Det Insp Holdall, played by Ray Winstone.

Scots actor Brian Pettifer plays Barney's discreet friend Charlie in the film.

Mark Adams, the EIFF's new Artistic Director, has 25 years experience as a film critic and programmer.

Doctor Who's former sidekick, Karen Gillan, is on this year's jury for the Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature Film.

Martin Compston, who plays Barney Thomson's more successful, younger colleague, arriving at the after-film party.
