A driver who died after a two-car crash in Edinburgh on New Year's Day had just moved to the city "to provide a better life for his family".

David Gasper, 20, from Hungary, was driving a Ford Fusion when it was in a collision with a Vauxhall Mokka at about 18:45 on Murrayburn Road.

His 13-year-old cousin sustained injuries to his torso.

Mr Gasper's family said he was "much-loved" and his death had left them "utterly devastated".

A family statement said: "He had travelled to Edinburgh last September with the hope of providing a better life for his family who he loved very much and we are all so sad that he is no longer with us.

"We take comfort from the thought that he is now at peace and we would like to thank the medics who tried to save his life. We also wish to express our gratitude to the local residents who came out from their homes and supplied water and blankets to David's cousin moments after the crash.

"We are still coming to terms with losing David and we ask anyone who witnessed the crash to please make yourself known to police and assist with their investigation."

The driver of the other vehicle sustained injuries to his body.

Mr Gasper was taken to Western General Hospital but succumbed to his injuries on Monday.

Police are appealing for witnesses.
