A man has died after being hit by a tram in Edinburgh.

The incident happened at the Saughton tram stop in Broomhouse Drive at about 12:15.

Police said the man had suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesman for Edinburgh Trams said an investigation into the incident was under way, adding that it was unable to comment further until this was completed.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "No-one else was hurt in the collision. Tram services remain suspended whilst officers carry out a collision investigation."

Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact police.

Lesley Macinnes, City of Edinburgh Council's transport convener, said: "This is dreadfully sad news and I'd like to offer my deepest condolences to the gentleman's family and friends.

"We are working closely with Police Scotland to investigate what happened."

Services have been disrupted with trams only running between Edinburgh Park Station and Edinburgh Airport, and from York Place to Haymarket.

The last time anyone was killed in an accident involving a Scottish tram was on 28 January 1959.

A Glasgow Corporation Tramways tram collided with a lorry and caught fire. The tram driver and two passengers were killed and 30 people were injured.

Edinburgh's new tramway was opened in May 2014 after numerous delays.

In June 2017, medical student Zhi Min Soh died after the wheel of her bike became stuck in tram tracks on Princes Street in Edinburgh and she was hit by a minibus.
