A digger has crashed into the front of an Edinburgh newsagent.

The stolen JCB telehandler mounted the pavement in front of the shop on Gorgie Road in the early hours.

Pictures on social media showed the store had suffered significant damage where the vehicle crashed into an ATM.

Police Scotland confirmed the incident was reported at about 04:00 and that they were treating it as an attempted break-in. It is not believed anyone was hurt.

Insp Scott Richardson said: "The JCB digger was stolen from the Keepmoat building site on Calder Road, and was seen in the area in convoy with a black Mercedes 4x4 and a white Ford flatbed truck.

"I am keen to hear from anyone who may have seen any of these vehicles and may be able to assist the investigation."

The road was partially blocked and traffic was delayed in both directions on Thursday morning.
