Four people taken to hospital after Kirkcaldy police vehicle crash

A police car was responding to a 999 call when the crash happened.

An elderly man was critically ill after a crash involving a police car and two other vehicles in Fife.

Four people were taken to hospital following the collision which involved while officers were answering a 999 call at about 16:50 in Kirkcaldy.

At least two people involved had to be removed from their cars by firefighters at the scene in Oriel Road.

Police said the 87-year-old driver of a Kia was in a critical condition at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee.

A 51-year-old woman who was driving an Audi was taken to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy but discharged after treatment.

Two police officers received treatment but were also discharged.

Sgt David Ross, of the road policing unit, said: "It would've been a busy time for commuters and we're appealing for anyone who might've witnessed this incident to contact us.

"I would ask people to check their dashcam footage."

As is standard procedure when there is an incident that involves the serious injury of a person following contact with the police, the incident has been referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner.
