A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a woman who fell from Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh.

Kashif Anwar, 27, made no plea as he appeared in private during a short hearing at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

Prosecutors claim Mr Anwar killed charity volunteer Fawziyah Javed, 31, from Pudsey, West Yorkshire, on Thursday 2 September.

Mr Anwar, of West Yorkshire, was remanded in custody and the case was continued for further examination.

Emergency services were called to the landmark at about 21:00 but Ms Javed died at the scene.

Colleagues at a Yorkshire charity where Ms Javed had worked to help homeless people since 2015 described her as a "genuine and very kind-hearted person".

Osman Gondal, chief executive of the InTouch Foundation, said: "We have lost a community champion - somebody who had a passion and drive to help people that were in need."

He said Ms Javed volunteered at a number of other charities as well as InTouch, and that made her a "very unique type of person".

Mr Gondal said: "You can have people who volunteer for, maybe, a day once a month.

"But whenever we needed her, she would always get involved."
