A Highland Games in Fife which dates back to the 1880s has been disbanded after organisers failed to find anyone to take on the event.

Cupar Highland Games had put out an appeal almost a year ago to find new volunteers.

The games, which date back to 1886, were restarted in 1979 and have become part of the region's summer circuit.

Athletes at the games who went on to become big names include Liz McColgan and Yvonne Murray.

The news follows the cancellation of the games in 2022.

A statement from Cupar Highland Games reads: "The committee of Cupar Highland Games regret to inform you that the games are now disbanded.

"Unfortunately we have been unable to find anyone to take on the games and therefore we have taken the decision to close the games.

"We would like to thank all attendees, suppliers and supporters for their support over the last few years."
