Man dies after being hit by vehicle on A78

A 42-year-old man has been knocked down and killed in an accident on the A78 in North Ayrshire.

The man was struck by a Peugeot van at 0150 GMT while walking along the northbound carriageway, north of the B7048, Portencross.

Emergency services attended but he died at the scene. No one else was injured. The A78 was closed to traffic for about four-and-half hours.

Police have appealed for witnesses to contact them.
