Lorry strike kills elderly couple in Hamilton

An elderly couple have died after being struck by a lorry while crossing the road in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire.

Emma and Jake Grier, both 76, from Motherwell, were hit by the vehicle near the Jet Garage in Townhead Street at 0945 GMT on Wednesday.

Mrs Grier later died in Wishaw General Hospital. Her husband died shortly afterwards in Hairmyres Hospital.

The 63-year-old male lorry driver was uninjured but badly shaken. Police have appealed for witnesses to contact them.

Roads around the crash scene were closed for several hours and diversions were put in place.
