Live journey time updates for M8 motorway drivers

Live journey time updates have been introduced along the whole of the motorway linking Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The government has said they will allow journey times on the M8 to be indicated on variable message signs (VMS).

The system is claimed to be one of the most advanced in Europe.

The information was already available on the national Traffic Information website, but displaying it on the VMS signs will make it available to drivers on the move.

Transport Minister Keith Brown said: "Thousands of Scottish drivers have already signed up to Transport Scotland's free travel planning mobile phone applications and travellers can also follow updates on Twitter.

"This takes the service a step further by reaching out to motorists while they are in their cars and unable to access the internet."

The scheme was made operational after collaboration between Transport Scotland and the City of Edinburgh Council.

They have said they are exploring the possibility of adding further routes within Edinburgh.

Transport Scotland has said it has "ambitions" to extend the service to other major towns and cities.

Mr Brown added: "This is one of several ways in which technology is being used effectively to make road travel easier for Scotland's motorists."
