Diageo demolishes giant chimney at Port Dundas site

Drinks giant Diageo has demolished a giant chimney at its former grain distillery in Port Dundas, Glasgow, in preparation for possible redevelopment of the site.

The 70-metre tall structure, which was built in 1973, was brought down by a controlled explosion.

The distillery closed last year with the loss of 200 jobs as part of a restructuring move by the drinks firm.

Diageo said the demolition was part of ongoing clearance of the site.

A spokesman added: "The demolition of the chimney is a central part of preparing the former site for potential future redevelopment and was carried out in line with all the necessary planning and health and safety regulations."

The company provided no further details about the redevelopment plans.
