Power restored after Glasgow blackout

Electricity supplies have been restored to most people in Glasgow after a blackout on Monday evening.

Scottish Power said their engineers were alerted to a power cut at 19:45, which affected homes, businesses and street lights in the south of the city.

The fault originated in the Govan area after a fault with an underground cable.

A spokesman for the company said the majority of those affected were reconnected within 30 minutes.

Unconfirmed reports suggested that at least 26,000 homes were disconnected.

Scottish Power could not confirm the number of homes affected.

A spokesman for Scottish Power said: "A power cut affected the south side of Glasgow from quarter to eight this evening.

"Engineers dealt with the problem and customers were back on by 20:20."

The spokesman added: "We don't know exactly how many customers were affected by the problem and we apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Network Rail confirmed it experienced problems with trains leaving Glasgow Central at about 20:00, including lines to Neilston and Cathcart.

Glasgow Climbing Centre in Paisley Road West, Govan, was hit by the power cut and had to bring many climbers safely down from the high walls.

Centre spokesman Tim Hamlet said: "The lights completely cut out but our security lights came on and provided just enough light for everyone to see and safely come off the walls.

"Our emergency lighting only lasts for an hour so customers had to leave the centre as it was unsafe to continue."
