Abington Primary School pupils rescued from flooding

A South Lanarkshire primary has been evacuated after a burn burst its banks in heavy rain and flooded the school.

Two teachers and 27 pupils from Abington Primary in Biggar were led through knee-high flood water by firefighters at about 12:00.

No-one was injured and the pupils and staff were moved to a safe location.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said crews remained at the scene after the rescue to pump water from the school in a bid to minimise damage.

Asst Chief Officer Robert Scott said: "We are currently dealing with a wide range of flood-related incidents across the Strathclyde region.

"In this particular case I'm pleased to say that, other than some wet feet, no-one was hurt and all the children and teachers were quickly moved by firefighters to a safe location.

"However, an incident like this illustrates how quickly water can overtake a premises in extreme weather conditions."

A spokesman for South Lanarkshire Council said: "We can confirm that officers from Strathclyde Fire and Rescue were in Abington Village in response to localised flooding.

"Given the rising flood waters, the school agreed to move pupils to the nearby Abington Hall and were ably assisted in this by Strathclyde Fire and Rescue.

"We are confident that the school will reopen as normal on Thursday morning."
