A 48-year-old man has been arrested by police over the murder of a schoolgirl more than 26 years ago.

Elaine Doyle, 16, died on her way home from a disco in Greenock, Inverclyde, on 1 June, 1986.

Her body was found the next day in a lane off Ardgowan Street, less than 50 yards from her home.

The man was arrested following a police operation in Greenock on Friday morning.

Elaine was last seen alive by two friends in Hamilton Way after she left the disco in Laird Street.

In 2011, detectives launched a fresh appeal for information and a reconstruction of her last movements was shown on the BBC's Crimewatch programme.

Elaine's 17-year-old nephew was murdered in Greenock last year.

Steven McIntyre, 19, was later jailed for a minimum of 15 years for the killing of Jack Doyle.
