Thousands in hospital treatment wait in NHS Glasgow and Clyde area

Scotland's largest health board has admitted that 2,400 people waited more than four hours for treatment over the Christmas period.

One person at the Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow waited 24 hours to be admitted to an appropriate bed.

Another patient at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley waited 20 hours.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said it was experiencing an intensely busy period but no-one needing emergency care would be turned away.

The health board said that 70 non-urgent operations had been postponed recently.
