Stephen McGinlay died after being stabbed in the neck by Liam Strang

The mother of a 26-year-old Glasgow murder victim has said she hopes his killers "rot in Hell".

Catherine McGinlay spoke out after Liam Strang, 21, was jailed for life for stabbing her son Stephen in the neck in St George's Road on 2 October 2014.

Strang will serve at least 16 years after being convicted of murder. His accomplice, Brian Gallacher, 18, will serve 10 years for culpable homicide.

Both were also given 18 months for assaulting the victim's friend.

Sentencing the pair at the High Court in Livingston, temporary judge John Morris told them: "You attacked an innocent young man in broad daylight with a lethal weapon in the street in Glasgow and took his life.

'Gas chamber'

"I want to make it clear to you and anybody who is listening that such acts of wanton violence can't be tolerated in a civilised society."

Following sentencing, Catherine McGinlay, 48, said she had been unable to attend the trial because she had suffered a nervous breakdown after the murder of her son.

She said: "I had to come here to see them getting sentenced. I'm really happy with what they got and it's about time they got it.

"I'm sorry, but I hope they rot in Hell, and if they had the gas chamber here I'd ask for that."

Both men had denied the charges against them but were convicted following an earlier trial at the High Court in Glasgow.

Mr McGinlay was attacked on St George's Road

The court was told that no motive was given for the attack, part of which was captured on CCTV.

The jury was shown images of a car stopping in St George's Road and Strang and Gallacher getting out the car and putting their hoods up.

After the attack they got back in the car and were driven off.

During the attack, Mr McGinlay suffered a stab wound to his neck which resulted in massive blood loss.

He managed to stagger into a nearby chip shop for help but died in hospital days later.

The court was told that his death had been caused by his brain being starved of oxygen due to massive blood loss.

Both accused also chased Mr McGinlay's friend, Ryan Mason. He was hit on the head with a bottle before Strang and Gallacher fled.

The jury heard how a Facebook photo of both accused was later traced by detectives and helped place them at the scene.

It showed Gallacher wearing the same distinctive top he had worn on the day of the murder.
