Rail services were severely affected across Scotland earlier, after a piece of machinery broke down during overnight engineering works.

There were no trains running in or out of Glasgow Queen Street high level station.

Scotrail said services were now returning to normal.

The train operator was reporting "minor delays" on the line affected, and said the bus replacement service was being stood down.

Trains to Glasgow Queen Street low level were not affected by the breakdown.

'Sorry' for disruptions

A Scotrail spokesman said: "We're sorry to customers for the disruption caused by Network Rail's broken down engineering vehicle, and share their frustration when these things happen.

"Anyone who has been delayed by 30 minutes or more is entitled to compensation under our Delay Repay Guarantee. To claim, customers just need to keep hold of their ticket and visit our website."

A Network Rail spokeswoman said: "Overnight, Network Rail engineers were carrying out work to the track and overhead line equipment at Cowlairs.

"Shortly before 04:00, a piece of machinery broke down."

The spokeswoman added: "We'd like to apologise for any disruption this incident is causing and thank passengers for their patience."

One commuter said: "It's really frustrating. I've come from Prestwick so I left very early this morning before they could tell me the services were cancelled. So it was a bit of a surprise to get here and find nothing running."

Another man said: "I just heard it on the radio as I was coming in. I suppose I could drive through but that's probably just as bad.

"You pay a lot of money for your ticket and your whole day is disrupted before it's even started."

Other train services have also been affected today, with several reports of poor rail conditions, following the strong winds last night.
