Man, 37, dies after shooting in Greenock

A man found fatally injured in a house in Inverclyde had been shot, BBC Scotland understands.

Police Scotland said they were called to Nairn Road in Upper Larkfield, Greenock, at about 01:15 on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow but died a short time later.

Officers said his death was being treated as suspicious but they will not confirm the cause until a post mortem examination is carried out.

Chief Insp Damian Kane, local area commander for Greenock, said: "Obviously this man's death is devastating for his family and very concerning for the wider community.

"Please be assured that we have additional high-visibility patrols in the area and should anyone wish to speak to officers and would encourage them to do so whilst respecting cordons that are in place.

"We appreciate that there may be raised tensions in the area, but again, my officers are there to reassure the community and can be approached by anyone with any concerns they may have following the incident."

He added officers were gathering CCTV footage from the surrounding area and carrying out door-to-door inquiries.

Det Supt Cameron Miller stressed the investigation was still at an early stage.

He said: "Today, and over the coming days, there will be significant police activity with both uniform and detective officers present within the local area as well as specialist forensic teams, carrying out inquiries in to this death.

"We are keen to hear from anyone who was in Nairn Road or the immediate vicinity around 01:15 who may have seen anything suspicious or anyone who has any information relating to this incident."

The senior officer also urged anyone with dash cam footage from the street or surrounding area during that time to come forward, external.

Police also said information could be passed to anonymously to Crimestoppers, external.

A long section of Nairn Road was still sealed off on Tuesday as well as a large grass embankment on one side of the street.

A BBC reporter at the scene said there were at least six police vehicles around the cordon.
