Police name man who died after street disturbance in Rutherglen

Police have named a man who died after a mass disturbance on a South Lanarkshire street.

Stuart McGeachie, 38, was seriously injured after being assaulted on Farmeloan Road, Rutherglen, at about 19:00 on Tuesday.

Officers said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said the incident involved a number of people who are believed to be known to each other.

They added the death was being treated as suspicious.

Mr McGeachie was from the Rutherglen area. His family released a statement through the force.

"We are devastated at the loss of Stuart, he was a much loved son, father and brother who will be greatly missed. As a family we ask for privacy at this time in order that we can process events and support each other," they said.

Det Ch Insp John Morrison said his thoughts were with Mr McGeachie's family and friends.

He added: "Our inquiries have so far revealed this incident involved a number of people, that we believe are known to each other.

"Our inquiries are ongoing. We will have a continued police presence in the area and anyone with any concerns can approach these officers.

"It is vital we find out more about what has happened as soon as we can and I would urge anyone with information to contact us as soon as possible, external."

Det Ch Morrison also urged anyone who may have dash cam or mobile phone footage to get in touch.

A 39-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with the possession of an offensive weapon and is due to appear before Glasgow Sheriff Court on Thursday.
