XL Bullies are now subject to restrictions in Scotland

An XL bully-type dog has been put down following an incident in North Lanarkshire.

Armed police were dispatched to Broughton Place in Coatbridge on Thursday amid reports the animal was out of control.

No shots were fired, but the dog was put down by a vet after being restrained by officers.

A 30-year-old woman was reported to the procurator fiscal in connection with an offence under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

No-one was injured in the incident, Police Scotland confirmed.

Restrictions on ownership of XL bully-type dogs were brought into force in Scotland last month.

Under the laws, the breeding and sale of the animals are now banned, while those already kept as pets must be muzzled in public places.

The legislation brought Scotland in line with similar measures put in place in England and Wales following concern over a series of fatal attacks.
