An architects practice on Skye has won a new design award in the Saltire Society 2010 Housing Design Awards.

Rural Design were the first recipient of the Saltire Medal and the firm also picked up the top honour in the private dwelling-new build category.

The honours were for its timber house at Fiscavaig on Skye.

Perthshire-based Colin Andrew Smith Architect also won an award in the private dwelling category for its Rock House.

Glasgow's Elder and Cannon Architects took the large scale housing development award for Queens Gate in Clydebank.

Archial Architects, which has its headquarters in London, and Glasgow-based Studio KAP were the winners in the renovations, alterations and extensions section.
