Inverness will host the 2014 Royal National Mod, it has been announced.

Organisers named the city during the last day of competition at this year's event in Thurso. It is the first time the event has been held in Caithness.

Next year's Mod will be held in Stornoway and the wider Western Isles, before it moves to Dunoon in 2012 and Paisley in 2013.

The last time the celebration of Gaelic arts and culture was staged in Inverness was in 1997.
