John O'Groats makeover proposals approved

Plans have been put forward to revitalise John O'Groats

A multi-million pound makeover for John O'Groats has been given the go-ahead by Highland Council.

Councillors have approved Manchester-based Natural Retreats' £6.5m plans for an upmarket tourism venture.

The company wants to create 16 eco-friendly, self-catering lodges and a visitor centre from the shell of the derelict John O'Groats Hotel.

It also wants to remodel the Journey's End cafe. Work is expected to start next year.

In September, John O'Groats was awarded the annual Carbuncle Award for the most dismal place in Scotland.

Architecture magazine Urban Realm described the town as a "bleak outpost".

However, Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) said there was potential for a "brilliant development" at the "spectacular location".
