A festival to promote the languages and cultures of Celtic countries has opened in Stornoway.

The three-day event aims to celebrate excellence in broadcasting and on screen from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany and the Isle of Man.

Among those taking part in the Celtic Media Festival will be five pupils from Highland schools.

They participated in an initiative to enable young people in the area to produce 12 short films.

Morag Stewart, producer of the An Sgàilean Ùr project, said: "The young people worked exceptionally hard, scripting, filming, editing and composing music.

"I think it's a measure of the project's success that they were willing to give up so much of their spare time to produce the films."

Councillor Hamish Fraser, chairman of Highland Council's Gaelic committee, added: "The young people are learning skills such as script writing, filming and producing skills, all of which will enrich their cultural and linguistic experiences outwith formal class room learning."
