The Princess Royal has been appointed chancellor of Scotland's newest university.

The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), which has sites in Argyll, Highland, Moray, Perth and the islands, was confirmed in February.

Princess Anne's ceremonial role will involve conferring degrees at graduations.

James Fraser, UHI's principal, said she had been a long time supporter of efforts to set up the university.

A date for the formal installation of the new chancellor is expected to be set for 2012.
