First Skye toll non-payer Donnie MacDougall dies

The first person to refuse to pay to cross the Skye Bridge on the day it opened in October 1995 has died.

Donnie MacDougall, 82, was from Sleat on Skye.

His stance led to thousands of others to campaign against the toll which was eventually abolished in 2004 by the Labour/Lib Dem Scottish Executive.

Among the 130 people convicted for refusing to pay the fee were Keith Brown, who is now transport minister, and campaigner Robbie the Pict.

Mr MacDougall was first driver to approach the toll after the road bridge opened to the public.

His funeral will be held on Sleat on Thursday.
