Displays of Edinburgh firm's wave power plan for Lewis

Aquamarine Power plans to install up to 50 of its Oyster devices off Lewis

Edinburgh-based wave energy firm Aquamarine Power is to hold public exhibitions on its plans for a scheme on the seabed off the Western Isles.

It proposes installing 40 to 50 of its Oyster devices, which are made in Fife and tested in Orkney, off Lewis.

It said the project would have the potential to supply electricity to up to 38,000 homes.

Starting next week, public displays are to be held on Galston Estate and in Stornoway.

Aquamarine Power has secured a lease for the seabed involved.

It has submitted an application to Marine Scotland for consent for the phased development of the wave energy farm. A decision on the application is expected later this year.

The company will also be applying to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council) in the spring for planning permission for associated onshore works.

Aquamarine Power is developing the proposals under the name of Lewis Wave Power Limited.
