Mother of soldier killed in Afghanistan praises Black Watch

Soldiers from the Black Watch have marched through Inverness to thank the city for its support during the battalion's recent tour of Afghanistan.

Among those watching was the mother of Aberdeen-born Acting Sgt Sean Binnie, 22, who was killed while on patrol in Afghanistan in 2009.

Janette Binnie said her family still received support from the troops.

Also there was Pte Stephen Bainbridge, 25, who lost both legs below the knees during the most recent deployment.

'Good battalion'

The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (3 Scots), is based at Fort George, near Inverness.

The battalion previously marched through the city centre in December 2009 following a tour of Afghanistan.

Mrs Binnie told BBC Radio Scotland: "It helped us when Sean was killed and Sean would have wanted me to be here today.

"It's his family. It's his brothers. We still keep in touch with all the boys.

"The last time we were here we had lost Sean and you don't take it all in. Today I can feel the pride."

She added: "I know Stephen came back injured, but thankfully we have not lost another soul. It's a good battalion."
