A new ferry has been commissioned by Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd to work on the Stornoway to Ullapool route.
Costing £41.8m, the company said it would be faster, greener and more reliable than existing vessels MV Isle of Lewis and MV Muirneag.
It will be able to take 700 passengers, 143 cars or 20 commercial vehicles.
Transport Minister Keith Brown said passengers would see marked improvements on the route once it starts sailing in June 2014.
