Tornado jet crash: Works starts on wreck recovery

Work is under way to recover the wreckage of two Tornados which crashed in the Moray Firth, with the loss of three airmen.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said it hoped "good progress" would be made.

Three airmen were killed when their Tornado GR4s from RAF Lossiemouth came down south of Wick, on the Caithness coast, last Tuesday afternoon during a training flight.

A fourth crewman survived and has been receiving hospital treatment.

Far Sapphire, a North Sea anchor handling vessel, has been contracted to lift the jets from the seabed.

Bangor-born Flt Lt Hywel Poole, 28, died at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness after being airlifted from the scene.

The bodies of Sqn Ldr Samuel Bailey, 36, from Nottingham, and Flt Lt Adam Sanders, 27, who grew up in Lancashire, have still to be recovered.

The sole survivor of the incident, who has not yet been named, was in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

The MoD said it could not give any further details on his condition.
