The National Trust for Scotland hopes the new network of footpaths will increase the appreciation of the battlefield

A new network of paths is being built to connect the Culloden Battlefield with the surrounding local community.

The £230,000 project will link Balloch, Smithton and Culloden and enable walkers to reach the site of the 1746 clash, via five miles (8km) of trails.

The paths will reach more remote parts of the battlefield.

The National Trust for Scotland, which owns the battlefield, said the network would increase understanding and appreciation of the site.

Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Jacobite forces were defeated by government troops at Culloden.
