A 20-week-long project to create an access road to the new Inverness Campus will start on 14 January.
Highland Council awarded civil engineers Wills Bros Ltd the £1.5m contract to carry out the work.
A stretch of road between Caulfield Road North and close to the Inshes Overbridge will be widened from two to four lanes.
The campus access road will be created immediately opposite an existing A9 slip road.
The area involved is one of the busiest for traffic in the Inverness.
Highlands and Islands Enterprise is leading the construction of the campus.
It will provide a base for the University of the Highlands and Islands and feature a £75m building for Inverness College.
Research businesses and organisations are also expected to set up on the campus.
