Snowsports 'boost' to Scotland's economy

Snowsports have contributed almost £20.5m to the Scottish economy since the start of the latest season, according to VisitScotland.

The tourism body said about £16.4m of that figure was money spent on accommodation, shops and fuel.

Ski centres at Glenshee, The Lecht, Cairngorms, Nevis Range, and Glencoe have benefited from wintry weather.

VisitScotland said Snow Factor, Glasgow's indoor snowsports centre, had played a part in the economic boost.

Ski-Scotland said this season could be one of the best snowsports seasons in Scotland in recent years.

Chairwoman Heather Negus said it was possible good conditions could continue for several weeks yet.

In June 2010, more than 100 skiers took advantage of ski tows being open at CairnGorm Mountain for the first time in midsummer.
