Donald MacLeod had aimed to tell one joke every six seconds

A Scotsman told 580 jokes told in an hour during an attempt to set a new world record.

Donald MacLeod, from Lewis, had aimed to beat the record of 549 which had been set by Australian comic Anthony Lehmann in 2005, external.

But his attempt, at Glasgow's Park Bar on Wednesday evening, has not been recognised as an official Guinness World Record.

English comedian and television actor Tim Vine is a previous record holder.

Mr MacLeod's one-liners included: "What would the drummer in the Mexican Beatles be called? Gringo Starr."

Speaking ahead of the event, he said all the jokes would be original material and he hoped to tell about one gag every six seconds.

Mr MacLeod, who is head actuary at financial mutual Scottish Friendly, said his favourite joke was: "Where's the best place in South Africa to get a Batman outfit? Cape Town."

His record attempt raised money for charity.

This article was subsequently updated to make clear that Mr MacLeod's attempt was not registered as an official world record. The title is no longer monitored by Guinness, but the last registered holder was Australian Taylor Goodwin.
