Lochaber communities campaigning against Corran fares

People living in Ardgour, Morvern and Ardnamurchan have launched a public campaign against fare increases on the Highland Council-run Corran Ferry.

The local authority is due to make the third rise in prices in a year when an inflationary increase is imposed.

The cost of the four-minute crossing between Nether Lochaber and Ardgour on Loch Linnhe went up 23% last November.

Highland Council said increases were needed to cover losses of more than £170,000 on the route.

Lochaber Liberal Democrat MP, Charles Kennedy, said campaigners were considering starting a petition, and sending it to Holyrood's petitions committee.

The Corran Ferry allows access to and from the communities of Ardgour, Morvern and Ardnamurchan via a narrow stretch of Loch Linnhe in Lochaber.

It is also used by people and businesses on Mull, who first travel to the mainland on the Fishnish-Lochaline ferry.

The Corran Ferry and Fishnish-Lochaline services also offer tourists an alternative to the Oban to Mull ferry.
