Drivers were forced to make a 77-mile diversion after a fire broke out on a lorry on the A9 just north of the Berriedale Braes in Caithness.

Emergency services were called to the scene at about 07:56.

The lorry's tractor unit and trailer, which was carrying rubbish, were destroyed. No-one was injured.

The A9 was closed in both directions between the A897 Dunrobin Street junction and the A99 junction in Latheron. It re-opened at about 16:30.

A 77-mile diversion had been put in place with cars being being diverted from Helmsdale via the A897/Thurso/Latheron.
