A headstone has been installed at the final resting place of a grizzly bear who became world famous after escaping while on the Western Isles.

Hercules was on the loose for 24 days in the summer of 1980 after he went on the run during filming for an advert.

He was recaptured and returned to his owners Andy and Maggie Robin.

After his death in 2000, Hercules was buried at the Robins' home in Dollar but his remains were later moved to North Uist, closer to where he escaped.

The Robins decided to reinter the bear's body because they were selling up and wanted Hercules to be somewhere where he would be remembered.

No people or livestock came to harm during the bear's escape.

Between 30 and 40 people attended a ceremony to mark the placing of the headstone.

Hercules' escape left a lasting impression on some people staying near where he got free.

Author Bella Pollen was a teenager on a family holiday on the islands when the bear escaped and the incident inspired her to later write a fictional story, Summer of the Bear.
