New campaign opposes government's Marine Protected Areas

A new campaign has been launched to oppose the Scottish government's designation of protected areas of seabed and coastline.

The Comhairle Fisheries Industry Group is leading the campaign.

Members of the group include Western Isles Council - Comhairle nan Eilean Siar - and Western Isles Fishermen's Association.

They argue Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) put unnecessary restrictions on traditional fishing grounds.

Representatives from the association and the comhairle have sought a meeting with Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead.
