Catheter bag among rubbish cleared from Britain's peaks

More than 24 stone (153kg) of litter was collected from Ben Nevis alone in this year's effort to clean up Britain's highest mountains

A catheter bag was among items of rubbish found by volunteers doing litter-picks on the slopes of Britain's highest mountains.

A total of 88 people were involved in the clean up of Ben Nevis in Scotland, Snowdon in Wales and England's Scafell Pike.

More than 24 stone (153kg) of litter was collected from Ben Nevis alone.

The volunteers were taking part in the Real Three Peaks Challenge, an annual effort to clean up the mountains.

Other items they removed during the latest effort included socks, gas cartridges, sanitary towels, long johns, parts of walking poles and a duvet.

Richard Pyne, challenge founder and coordinator of the Ben Nevis clean up, said: "I started the Real Three Peaks Challenge back in 2013 because of the littering issue I encountered on the summit of Ben Nevis, filling two carrier bags in as many minutes.

"I was appalled by what I found up there."
