Canopy proposed for rainy Fort William

A giant canopy has been proposed for part of Fort William, one of Scotland's rainiest towns.

Stretching to about 17m in length and costing an estimated £95,000, it would shelter Cameron Square in the town centre.

On average, rain falls on 201.5 days to a total level of 1,809.4mm a year, according to Met Office statistics.

Fort William Town Team and Fort William Marina and Shoreline Company have sought permission for the canopy.

Sarah Kennedy, who is involved in the proposal, said Fort William was no stranger to rainy days.

But she said rain during an event to celebrate the arrival of a cruise ship in September had prompted the canopy plans.

Ms Kennedy said: "Some entertainment had been arranged in Fort William for the cruise ship passengers and other visitors to the town.

"But just as the country dancing was about to start it began pouring down. It was not the image we wanted people to have of Fort William.

"We want to encourage people to come to this part of the Highlands. We have such fantastic scenery."

Fort William Town Team and Fort William Marina and Shoreline Company have jointly submitted a planning application to Highland Council.

The groups hope the canopy could be in place by May next year ready for the arrival of more cruise ships.
