A school in Inverness is to be closed from Wednesday after about 70 pupils fell ill to a sickness bug.

Kinmylies Primary is not expected to reopen until Monday 27 November to allow time for the children to recover and for a deep-clean of the building.

The decision to close the school followed discussions between Highland Council and public health protection officers.

The head teacher has apologised to parents for the inconvenience.

The school has a roll of 257 children.

In a letter to parents, head teacher Fiona McKellar said the health of pupils and staff was "paramount".

She added: "If your child has been sick, it is advisable and important to avoid contact with other families for a minimum of 48 hours from the last episode of sickness or diarrhoea.

"Children cannot return to school within this time. If any parent is concerned about their child, they should seek telephone advice from their GP."
