Mountain rescuers head for the scene of the woman's accident

An injured skier was rescued after a smartwatch-type device was used to raise the alarm.

The woman, who was part of a group, fell and dislocated a shoulder in Coire Raibert in the Cairngorms.

The device was used as a personal locator beacon and alerted an emergency contact in the UK via a co-ordination centre in Houston, Texas.

A coastguard helicopter flew through hail and snow squalls to reach the woman and she was flown to hospital.

Another person in the party used the wrist-worn device to raise the alarm.

Members of Cairngorm and Dundonnell mountain rescue teams were called out on Friday

Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team, external, which along with Dundonnell MRT, external were asked to assist in the rescue, believe it was first time they had responded to a call for help made using such a device.

The woman was flown to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness for treatment after the rescue on Friday.

Cairngorm MRT said flying conditions for the helicopter crew were "marginal" due to the wintry squalls.
